A last minute decision to take a break at Fistral Blue led to us arriving unprepared for an evening meal but Teryaki Chicken and Moules Frittes at The Lewinnick were just the ticket. The gull dawn chorus woke us up in time for a quiet stroll across the bay to The Beached Lamb for brunch and mooch around Newquay. What a change from the storms of last winter – the surf’s up and the surf schools out in force.

We then discovered a new walk up behind the apartment and across the beautiful Gannel estuary and around the corner into Crantock – a beautiful stretch of sandy beach. A quick power wash of the terrace and a visit to Padstow for real Cornish scones, clotted cream and saffron buns from Chough Bakery to take home.

Then stop off on the way home to have something to eat at Jamaica Inn on Bodmin Moor ahead of the new TV series which starts shortly and we are back again planning our next visit.

Just time for a quick visit to Fistral Blue Apartment before our first visitors of the season arrive and what a weekend!

Opening the blinds on the wall of glass on Saturday morning having arrived the previous evening in the dark never disappoints – 30ft waves breaking outside the bay and over Pentire Point, the sea churning and full of froth. After a brisk and invigorating walk into Newquay for a late breakfast it was down to Gwithian to watch the extreme surfers in the Red Bull Storm Chase event (highlights here). Back just in time to cuddle up on the sofa in the warm and watch the 6 nations rugby with a large glass of red wine.

Jon graduated on Monday so we saw a great opportunity to make a weekend out of it in the flat! We used the weekend as a chance to road test more things to see/do for guests and had some great fun in the process!

We decided to try out something that might appeal to the more adventurous guest – High Tide Coasteering by the old lifeboat station on Headland Road with Newquay Activity Centre. After a quick brief we were literally thrown in at the deep end an 8ft jump into the Atlantic which immediately got the blood pumping. Several more jumps, increasing in height everytime until the big one… 30ft! After a bit of encouragement we all managed it and were chuffed with ourselves! A quick swim across ‘The Gazzle’ and we were guided into a pitch black tunnel and managed to keep our cool whilst swimming through it! Scary stuff!
