Summer 2014 has been a very busy one with record bookings at Fistral Blue Apartment. The downside to wall-to-wall bookings in June, July, August and September is that there was no time for a family visit to Newquay so a recent trip was long overdue.

A slightly blowy weekend is always a good time to feel the reinvigoration afforded by the beautiful county and coastline of Cornwall and this was no exception. A chance to sample the health facilities at the Merchants Manor was followed by dinner at the wonderfully querky and usually oversubscribed Provedore restaurant in Falmouth which delivered very tasty tapas of ground lamb houmous and slow cooked beef cheeks with chickpeas all washed down with Spanish lager.

A delightful morning browsing quaint independent shops in Falmouth was followed by a return to Newquay and a front row seat in Walkabout for the NZ v England Autumn International. Walkabout can always be relied on to be showing the rugby and deliver a fairly decent plate of food and a pint whilst overlooking the main beach and harbour.

A quick change and over to the Headland Hotel for an annual dinner with friends. The mussels were very tasty but the menu overall a little limited, the service average and the price didn’t quite reflect the quality of the offering. Definitely back to the Lewinnick next year for the food, ambience and value for money. We also picked up news of a new fish restaurant in the Fistral Beach complex which is being run by someone who used to work for Rick Stein and is getting rave reviews – something for us to try and review next time.

Sunday morning and we were up early for a walk from Perranporth and working up an appetite for a carvery lunch at The Watering Hole which is right on the beach. Tea, coffee and cake are also on offer and there is a fully stocked bar – special mention must be made of the hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows. Dogs seem to be welcome on the outside and covered terraces. A great place to sit and watch the sea and the world go by.

All too soon it is time to return to reality…..
